What jute know about jute;

^ You see what I did there? I'm pretty cool I know ;) or just super nerdy

I've been dying to do this little D I Y ever since I saw a picture on Pinterest a while back.

I fooled myself into thinking that this light we bought from Lowes would be fine as is in our home,

 it was such a good deal & our light before was this hideously outdated fan with gold accents all over it so it just had to go. I've always know this wouldn't be our forever house so I try not to be very picky when a good deal comes up & we can update the house at the same time but with me being me I just couldn't look at this lamp shade anymore.

It was slightly the right color, but slightly not. But what bugged me the most about it was they didn't even carry the fabric of the shade into the inside, which its a huge drum shade so you can see the inside quite clearly. Its a yellowy beige & the inside was bright white.

Sooooooo, I dreamt {thats a word right?} up this beautiful image of wrapping it in Jute in my head. 

We have a ton of jute rugs throughout our house, so it would jive way so much better & add a little texture to the space, which is never a bad thing in my book ;) .

I just waited a few months before asking the Hubs to take down the light he was so proud of putting up in the first place {loooooooooooove you honey!}

BEFORE:

I'm willing to accept that the before really isn't that bad & that I totally made it sound way worse then it really was, but guys, it REALLY bugged me how it didn't match like anything at all in my house.

It also really peeved me that you could see the seams & the plain white inside of the lamp shade so it needed something.

So here's some step by step pictures I took of the process while doing this.

{p.s. if you decide to ever do this to something, make sure you've got a movie on or a DVR full of shows to watch because it takes FOREVER}

I kind of jumped the gun & started but then realized I should show how I did this;

but it was actually super easy. All you need is a few rolls of jute. It took me about 3 & 1/2, which can be bought at Lowes or Walmart. They are about 2-2.50 a roll, so fairly cheap for such a big difference.

All I did was take the roll & start wrapping it around the shade, the first line I tied a small knot at the top & just kept going, that way it held it in place.

This was after about 45 minutes of doing this, and I thought my fingers were going pretty fast once I got the hang of it. I wills say though that the lamp shade itself is a bit more yellowy in person, I couldn't get a good picture of the coloring on my camera,

So basically you just keep wrapping, & tying once you get to the end of a roll or start a new roll, try to make the knots as small as possible, that way you can't notice them.

AFTER;

I feel like the darker color goes much better with the ascetic in my house,

& the fact that I have a lot more jute accents than that yellow beige color that I had none of.

My favorite part about this is that it is all the same the same color//texture, no more two toned light.

{which if you've read my blog for awhile you know I am not a fan of two tone that much ha!}

As far as light goes, I haven't noticed much of a difference in the light it gives off with it being more darker of a color & a heavier fabric//texture, if anything I think it makes it a bit better because the light really poured out of it before.

So there you have it, my D I Y Jute Wrapped Light!

D.I.Y. Laundry Soap

I first found this lovely recipe over at LizMarieBlog,
And have since wanted to try it!

Last Wednesday I went by my local Wal-Mart to pick up stuff to make my own Laundry Detergent.

All the ingredients shown you can purchase for under 15 dollars!
Which doesn't sound like much of a deal now but it makes 2 gallons worth of soap,

the best part? You only need 2 table spoons.

This stuff is going to be a major money savor!

I don't know about you all but we go through A LOT of Laundry Soap in this household.

In large parts due to my husbands job,

I am not a fan of the smell of Jet Fuel haha!

This is what you will need:

All of these products can be found at Walmart.

Even that realllllllllly cute container ;)

Ingredients:

1. Oxi Clean {One large container, One small}
2. Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
3. Borax
4. Three Fels-Naptha Laundry Soap Bars (You can use any kind of soap you want here}
5.  & Pure Baking Soda
6. This part is optional but if you would like a certain scent you can add fabric softener to get any desired smell :)

What you will need:

1. A cheese grader
2. A large bucket
3. A large bowl

This was actually really easy to make.

The hardest part was grading the bars of soap with a cheese grader.

That is when your handy dandy husband/significant other comes into play!

As you can see above, you just grate the soap like you would cheese and if it weren't for the smell of laundry you would actually think it is cheese haha!

Then grab your big bucket;

Take all the products I showed you above & dump them into the bucket.

Including your freshly graded laundry soap.

& then mix it all up!

YUP!

That is it!

I found this cute little container in the kitchen gadgets isle/canning isle at my Walmart.

& that little blue scooper is actually an Oxi Clean one which comes with the big container of the Oxi  Clean listed above.

I have used this for a few loads and it works just like any other laundry soap! Except you use way less.

Only 2 tablespoons! {or to the second line of the scooper}

I also wanted to let you guys know that this is perfect if you have sensitive skin, I do and it hasn't bothered me at all! I bought the Oxi Clean for sensitive skin {the green lid}

& this also works for HE washers.

I love how cute it looks though!

HA! I just called Laundry cute.

Crackle Paint

Recently I shared with you all my bathroom redo.

Well when it came time to getting a mirror I didn't want just a plain ol' mirror.

First I thought one of those big antique ones would look amazing, until I started researching prices.

So while at the Salvation Army one day I stumbled across this gem:

Are you as amazed as me?!

Anyways, I decided the white against the white vanity stand in our bathroom was just too basic for the feel I was going for.

So I used a color from a previous project I did for my bathroom.

A few weeks ago my friend Brittney was over and while she was getting supplies at Michael's for her paintings, I decided I would get some Mason Jars and paint them and use them as candle holders for in my lovely new bathroom, I came across this awesome color in the Martha Stewart Craft line, Pearl Aquarium.

So it was just a given that I should use that color as well for my mirror, but again, I wanted something different so I tried crackle paint. And I am just in LOVE with the result. And the color! It matches perfectly with my shower curtain.

After:

The pearl affect that the paint has looks amazing on the mirror,

it really is a statement piece in the bathroom because it just sticks out.

This project was really quick and simple to do!

All you need is:

* Whatever color you desire. I chose to stay with the Martha Stewart craft line since the Crackle Paint was from her line.

As for the black paint, I wasn't sure how much I needed so I bought that kind because it was only 1.99 which is how much the smaller paint pictured (Peal Aquarium) was.

I opted to get three different disposable brushes because the paint drys fast and you need to quickly add coats over the top of it to gain the crackle affect.

On the back of the Crackle paint are instructions for how to do it.

First you need to paint the entire base of the mirror in whatever color you want to bleed through, I chose black.

You want to wait for the paint to be dry, after that you apply the crackle affect you want to wait for the surface to be semi dry, by that I mean you want it tacky, this part was left out on the bottle but it is important to not forget it, once it is tacky then apply the paint you want to be dominant, for instance, the Pearl Aquarium paint. After that you just let it dry completely and there you have it!

A beautiful crackled mirror that looks aged :)

I couldn't love my mirror anymore!
